The US banking system will lose some 1,000 institutions over the next two years, said John Kanas, whose private equity firm bought BankUnited of Florida in May.
“We’ve already lost 81 this year,” Kanas told CNBC. “The numbers are climbing every day. Many of these institutions nobody’s ever heard of. They’re smaller companies.”

Failed banks tend to be smaller and private, which exacerbates the problem for small business borrowers, said Kanas, who became CEO of BankUnited when his firm bought the bank and is the former chairman and CEO of North Fork bank.
“Government money has propped up the very large institutions as a result of the stimulus package,” he said. “There’s really very little lifeline available for the small institutions that are suffering.”

This comes at a time when the FDIC has established new rules on bank sales. Private equity, for instance, would have to hold double the capital of their competitors in order to buy such an institution, said Kanas.
“This will have somewhat of a chilling effect on our participation,” he said. “As a result of having to keep higher capital levels, we’ll see lower prices coming from that sector.”
Of the 81 failed banks this year, two have been successfully acquired by private equity, he said. Kanas’ private equity firm bought UnitedBank, the failed Florida-based bank, from the FDIC in May. Regulators also allowed the sale of IndyMac Bank of California earlier this year.
“We are seeing more people step up and lobby bids in this situation,” he said. “We’re seeing more players mostly as a result of being attracted to the sector. I’m not so sure that will continue now that the rules have been ratchet it up.”
Meanwhile, much of the commercial realty problem resides in the regional and small community banks, said Kanas, because larger banks haven’t fueled that sector in the past.
“The market is expecting about the way we were expecting,” he said. “Unfortunately, we’re not seeing any evidence of a recovery in the real estate market in the southern Florida market,” he said.

The Clearing House Association, another name for all the banks that were bailed out over the past year with the generous contributions from all of you, dear taxpayers, are now threatening with another instance of complete systemic collapse if Bloomberg’s lawsuit is allowed to proceed unchallenged, let alone if any of the “Audit The Fed” measures are actually implemented.
As a reminder, The Clearing House Association consists of ABN Amro, Bank Of America, The Bank Of New York, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, JP Morgan Chase, US Bank and Wells Fargo.
In a declaration filed in the Bloomberg Case (08-CV-9595, Southern District of New York), the banks demonstrate no shame in attempting to perpetuate the status quo with regard to the Federal Reserve and demand that the wool over the eyes of the general population remain firmly planted in perpetuity.
The Clearing House submits this declaration because the Court’s Order threatens to impair the ability of our members to access emergency funds through the New York Fed’s Discount Window without suffering the severe competitive harm that public disclosure of their identity will cause.
Our members have accessed the New York Fed’s Discount Window with the understanding that the Fed will not publicly disclose information about their borrowing, especially their identity. Industry experience, including very recent and searing experience, has shown that negative rumors about a bank’s financial condition – even completely unfounded rumors – have caused competitive harm, including bank runs and failures.
Surely transparency would facilitate rumor-mongering to an unprecedented degree. After all rumors spread much easier when everyone knows the true financial condition of banks.
And here, in plain written Times New Roman, you see what racketeering by a major bank consortium looks like:
If the names of our member banks who borrow emergency funds are publicly disclosed, the likelihood that a borrowing bank’s customers, counterparties and other market participants will draw a negative inference is great. Public speculation that a financial institution is experiencing liquidity shortfalls – which would be a natural inference from having tapped emergency funds – has caused bank customers to withdraw deposits, counterparties to make collateral calls and lenders to accelerate loan repayment or refuse to make new loans. When an institution’s customers flee and its credit dries up the institution may suffer severe capital and liquidity strains leaving it in a weakened competitive position.
Pardon me if I am a broken record here, but would rumors not spread much less if there was more transparency, if investors and other financial intermediaries were fully aware of the conditions of their counterparties, if banks did not have to cover their billions in reserve losses by pretending they are viable and essentially being constant wards of the state?
The Banks’ racketeering has gone on for far too long.
And yet, it does not stop: the conclusion from the banks’ letter:
In sum, our experience differs from the factual conclusions the Court appears to have reached about the nature of competition in the banking industry:
- The competitive harm to institutions that are publicized as needing emergency funding is not “speculative,” but demonstrated by the recent multiple failures of financial institutions whenever information about their funding difficulty has been disclosed.
- The disclosure does not involve mere “embarassing publicity” but information that could result in the immediate demise of an institution.
- The disclosure would not merely “stigmatize [ ]“the institution or make it “look [ ] weak,” but goes to its very viability.
- The disclosure of accessing emergency funding is not an “inherent risk” of market participation, but an extraordinary risk in extraordinary circumstances.
- Competitors can use the disclosure to advertise or publicize that they are financial stronger because they don’t need emergency funding.
In a nutshell – the banks want their complete opacity cake and eat it too, or else, the racket goes, the transparency that will somehow promote massive rumor mongering will again destroy capitalism. In the meantime, the Ken Lewises of the world can continue touting how stable their businesses are based on optimistic future projections, while implicitly, they continue to survive merely thanks to the cash granted them by you, taxpayers.
Mexico Legalizes All Drugs ~ Denver $1 Pot Fine ~ Oakland Taxes Marijuana

MEXICO CITY — Mexico enacted a controversial law on thursday decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD and other drugs while encouraging government-financed treatment for drug dependency free of charge.
The law sets out maximum personal use amounts for drugs, also including LSD and methamphetamine. People detained with those quantities will no longer face criminal prosecution; the law goes into effect on Friday.
Anyone caught with drug amounts under the personal-use limit will be encouraged to seek treatment, and for those caught a third time treatment is mandatory — although no penalties for noncompliance are specified.
The maximum amount of marijuana considered to be for personal use under the new law is 5 grams — the equivalent of about four marijuana cigarettes. Other limits are half a gram of cocaine, 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams for methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams of LSD.

DENVER – A city panel in charge of overseeing marijuana possession crimes in Denver recommended on Wednesday that the fine for possession be set at $1.
If Denver’s presiding judge accepts the recommendation from the Denver Marijuana Policy Review Panel, the fine would be the lowest in the entire nation for marijuana possession.
The panel was created by Mayor John Hickenlooper in December 2007 after voters passed an ordinance that made it so adult marijuana possession is the city’s “lowest lawn enforcement priority.”

OAKLAND – Residents are establishing a tax of $18 for every $1000 in revenue for marijuana dispensaries. According to SmartVoter, a non-partisan election information website run by the League of Women Voters, the measure will generate almost $300,000 in 2010.
Furthermore, if taxing medical dispensaries proves to be successful and profitable, the effort would likely be looked upon as something of an experiment for broader taxation of cannabis and ultimately legalization and regulation.
Measure F is a step in the right direction and with any luck, the first successful experiment in generating revenue from marijuana sales.

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
In POLITICS & GOVT on August 25, 2009 at 14:52The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows that 28% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama
is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -12 (see trends).
Today’s Approval Index rating reflects a slight improvement from yesterday’s record low of -14. The number who Strongly Approve ticked up a point while the number who Strongly Disapprove has moved down a point. Today is the President’s third straight day with an Approval Index rating in negative double digits. He has never had four straight days with such low ratings.
The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates also available on Twitter and Facebook.
Overall, 49% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. Fifty percent (50%) now disapprove.
Thirty-five percent (35%) of voters believe the Cash-for-Clunkers program has helped the economy while 23% believe it hurt. The federal government gets poor marks for the way it administered the program.
State polling shows that Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick (D) has lost a little ground in his 2010 bid for re-election. In Michigan just 2% rate the economy as good or excellent while 79% say poor. The state’s voters are evenly divided on the President’s health care plan. Like voters everywhere, those who oppose the plan feel more strongly about it.

Of the priorities outlined by the President earlier this year, 40% of voters say cutting the deficit is most important. Twenty-one percent (21%) believe health care should be the top objective. While deficit reduction is seen as the most important, 67% say it is the least likely to be achieved.

President Obama’s numbers are always several points higher in a poll of adults rather than likely voters. That’s because some of the President’s most enthusiastic supporters, such as young adults, are less likely to turn out to vote. Other factors are also important to consider when comparing Job Approval ratings from different polling firms.

Daily tracking results are collected via telephone surveys of 500 likely voters per night and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. The margin of sampling error—for the full sample of 1,500 Likely Voters–is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Results are also compiled on a full-week basis and crosstabs for full-week results are available for Premium Members.
Like all polling firms, Rasmussen Reports weights its data to reflect the population at large (see methodology). Among other targets, Rasmussen Reports weights data by political party affiliation using a dynamic weighting process. While partisan affiliation is generally quite stable over time, there are a fair number of people who waver between allegiance to a particular party or independent status. Over the past four years, the number of Democrats in the country has increased while the number of Republicans has decreased.
Our baseline targets are established based upon separate survey interviews with a sample of adults nationwide completed during the preceding three months (a total of 45,000 interviews) and targets are updated monthly. Currently, the baseline targets for the adult population are 38.4% Democrats, 32.7% Republicans, and 28.9% unaffiliated. Likely voter samples typically show a slightly smaller advantage for the Democrats.

tingling in the limbs and chronic fatigue
even that frog in the reeds has his pond under siege
neurotoxic design – a lowered IQ
lost in three lines of a poets hykoo
i know i’m like you – my body’s sorta the same
and there’s also fluoride added to my water mains
skeletal fluorosis – osteoarthritis
they misguide and deny – glossing over the entire list
then the cost of those who fight this – more stress and dismay
i don’t believe we receive blessings this way.

but it works great in suppressing the thyroid function

for babies fluoride is a very fatal guest
causing birth defects, infant and perinatal death
we bought lies for years – oh such is foresight
lead a horse to water but he won’t touch the fluoride
clutching at straws tight – now there’s a cause and war to fight
population sedation – if only water was watertight
we don’t deserve this prison so I’m the first to listen
to disturbed workers whistling out words of wisdom
disguised as service it’s the worst assistant to my nervous system
it makes the system nervous cos now we curse and diss them
if this as an experiment then what is their agenda?
why are they satisfied with death and won’t stop at mere surrender
it shows a lack of true ethics and is actually eugenics
and many politicians are still too happy to defend this
for me it wouldn’t fit – this water’s thicker than blood
we shouldnt quit til we abort the stick in the mud
take this batton in your fist before i’m shortened of breath
and my behavior patterns twist – for this water is death
kick it out – head it off – shut em down – sing it out
move em on – kick it out – cut em down – sling em out
chop em down – cut it off – push em on – tip it out
shut it down – move em on – turn it off… fluoride
